Picking up a key

In this assignment, my task was to produce a comic strip of 7 to 9 panels based on a five sentence story, where I had to alter the last of the five sentences and the identity of the main character. The exercise comes from McCloud (2006). The character in McCloud is supposed to be a man. I had to change the character to a woman or creature or a different man. I also had to change the last sentence (about the lion) to a different ending. The number of panels was supposed to be between 7 to 9 panels. The five sentences are:

  1. A man is walking.
  2. He finds a key on the ground.
  3. He takes it with him, then he comes to a locked door.
  4. He unlocks the door.
  5. Then a hungry lion jumps out.

Image 1 is the original comic from McCloud’s book and Image 2 is my version of the story.

Reflection: This process made me think about designs from different perspectives. I wanted the viewer to laugh at the unexpected ending, and not just at my drawing (believe me, the sketches will be better for the following articles). I had to convey the message without any text, without any fancy sketches, and in limited space. I used this technique later for making scenarios for my projects and I was able to focus the attention on important details in a simple way.
